Washington, D.C. — Speaker Paul Ryan has promised his caucus they will vote on at least two anti-immigrant bills next week, as House Republicans come to a stand-off on a Dream Act last night. Outside the Capitol steps, U.S. Representatives Judy Chu (CA-27), Jim Costa (CA-16), Rep. Barbara Lee (CA-13),  and Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) joined dozens of immigrants, families, Dreamers, and their allies to oppose the Goodlatte bill, or any other legislation that gives fuel to Trump’s mass deportation machine.

The Value Our Families coalition—led by Asian Americans Advancing Justice, Church World Service, and The National Korean American Service & Education Consortium (NAKASEC)— sponsored dozens of immigrant activists, families, and faith leaders from 12 states to lobby their Members of Congress in Washington, DC to urge them to oppose the Goodlatte bill and any other provisions that aim to stop millions of families from reuniting. Record number of Asian Americans seek office in 2018 Illinois Primary

Election winners include first ever Asian American in IL State Senate

More Asian Americans in Illinois are seeking political office than ever before, a trend that continued in Tuesday’s primary election. A record number of Asian Americans sought seats in the U.S. Congress, State House, and local governments across the state. With over 700,000 Asian Americans in Illinois, our community has begun to show its power and run for office at all levels.

Among the winners in the March 20 election was Ram Villivalam (D), who sought the seat in Illinois Senate district 8. Villivalam will be the first Asian American to serve in the Illinois Senate, as well as the first South Asian in the General Assembly when he is inaugurated in January, 2019. Theresa Mah (D), the first Asian American to serve in the General Assembly, will return to the Illinois House after running uncontested. (more…)

Washington, DC —February 15, 2018 — The Senate ended today by failing to pass a bill to provide a path to citizenship for undocumented youth. Among the amendments up for a vote was a bill heavily supported by the Trump administration, a white nativist wish list which failed miserably on the floor.

Senate Bill Pitts Undocumented Youth Protections Against Lives of Other Immigrant Communities

Washington, DC — February 15, 2018 — Today, the Senate is expected to vote on a compromise that offers a path to citizenship for a large portion of undocumented youth who would qualify for the DREAM Act, but it comes at too high a cost. The latest amendment offered by Senators Mike Rounds and Angus King ends one category of family-based visas, includes $25 billion for border security, and blocks undocumented youth from sponsoring their parents in the future.

Asian American Civil Rights Organizations Reject These Plans And Call for a Vote On A Clean DREAM Act

Washington, DC — February 14, 2018 — Today, Republicans offered partisan anti-immigrant proposals for votes. These amendments are nothing more than an immigration reform in disguise while failing to provide a solution for DACA recipients – the real problem that Trump manufactured by ending the program on September 5, 2018.
