Advancing Justice Condemns President’s Pardon of Arpaio and Directive to Implement a Transgender Ban

Washington, D.C. — On Friday, August 25, President Trump continued to side with racists and bigots by pardoning former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio — who had been convicted of criminal contempt in a case involving racial profiling of Latino immigrants — and continuing with a military directive to implement a transgender ban. While the White House also announced the departure of controversial advisor Sebastian Gorka, who promoted white supremacist views, the other actions on Friday indicate this administration is charging ahead with its divisive agenda.

Community groups encouraged by Rauner’s comments on Illinois TRUST Act

TRUST will protect immigrant families and promote public safety

CHICAGO – Appearing on WBEZ’s Morning Shift program this morning, Governor Bruce Rauner spoke enthusiastically about  about the Illinois TRUST Act, noting the broad support behind the bill among immigrant communities, business, law enforcement, and other allies.  He called the bill “very reasonable” and said that an announcement regarding the bill would come shortly.

“We are encouraged by Governor Rauner’s positive comments this morning regarding the Illinois TRUST Act,” said Andrew Kang, legal director at Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago. “This moves Illinois one step closer to common-sense, Constitutional, state-level public safety policy.”

Under the TRUST Act, local police cannot comply with federal immigration detainers and warrants not issued by a judge. Local police also cannot stop, search, or arrest anyone based on that person’s immigration or citizenship status. (और ज्यादा…)

Advancing Justice Condemns the Acts of Terror and Hate Displayed By White Supremacists

Affiliation Calls on President to Denounce White Supremacist Violence

The world witnessed a domestic act of terror and an ugly display of hate as white supremacists marched in Charlottesville, Virginia over the weekend. Yesterday, white nationalists turned their violent message into action as a driver plowed into a crowd of anti-racism counter protesters, killing one person and injuring several others.

Following Community-Led Effort, Gov. Rauner Commits to Sign Illinois TRUST Act
Bill backed by broad coalition would make Illinois a national leader in welcoming immigrants, and provide strongest statewide protections in the country

(CHICAGO, IL) After hundreds of community leaders visited their state legislators in Springfield and in district, thousands of residents called the Governor’s office, and two days after community leaders presented the Governor with over 3,600 postcards collected in just three weeks, the Campaign for a Welcoming Illinois is proud to announce that Governor Bruce Rauner has committed to signing the Illinois TRUST Act (SB 31). Federal DREAM Act, and Illinois TRUST Act would protect immigrants from deportation

Asian Americans Advancing Justice applauds today’s bipartisan introduction of the DREAM Act by Senator Durbin and Senator Graham. The bill would provide undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children a path to citizenship, and is a step in the right direction in fixing our broken immigration system. Along with saving the DACA program, Congress should offer pathways to citizenship for all 11 million undocumented immigrants, not only students.

In addition to the DREAM Act and preserving DACA at the federal level, states also have the opportunity to consider policy that protects immigrants. Here in Illinois, the bi-partisan TRUST Act passed the legislature and is now sitting on Governor Bruce Rauner’s desk, waiting for his signature.
