Light punishment devalues Asian Americans, immigrants, women, and people who are undocumented

CHICAGO –Asian American community members gathered on Friday in front of Chicago Police Department Headquarters to call on Superintendent Garry McCarthy to fire police officers involved in the Jessica Klyzek police brutality case in 2013. IPRA’s recommendation does not grant the community the justice it deserves

CHICAGO – The Independent Police Review Authority has announced its recommendations for reprimanding the police officers involved in the Jessica Klyzek case, and has suggested menial penalties that do not match the severity of the misconduct by the officers involved.  Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago calls on Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy to act within his power to fire these officers. Moral Mondays Illinois comes to the North Side

As the increasing tension of Illinois’ budget impasse hurts our communities, Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago supports clergy and community members protesting the ethics behind the looming cuts during Moral Mondays Illinois.

ONE Northside and Fair Economy Illinois led more than 200 people marching through Uptown. Speakers and representatives approached the budget as a moral document and argued state leaders show a lack of decency when they divert money away from essential community programs. (더 보기…)

A Voting Rights Act for the 21st Century

America in 2015 looks very different than America in 1965. While I am very moved by President Obama’s call to “restore” the Voting Rights Act of 1965, I believe we really need a VRA for the 21st Century to better reflect our multi-cultural and multi-lingual nation that exists in 2015. Across the country, we see the persistent attacks on our right to vote. Instead of fighting a defensive battle, this is the time to look into the future and share a vision of how we engage with our democracy that inspires people to participate. We could start with reliable and clear voter registration updates, more Early Voting sites and dates, “no fault” Vote-by-Mail options, in-language ballots  for any limited-English proficient citizen and more multi-lingual and cultural Election Judges. Scenes from the Youth Empowerment Open Mic

Rappers, singers, steppers and poets performed at the Youth Empowerment Open Mic on July 30, sharing stories about police brutality, racial injustices and love, learned and lost.

Elephant Rebellion, a youth empowerment hip-hop collective, hosted an open mic on July 30 at the Chicago Art Department to provide a platform for local youth to showcase their talents and experiences.

Students from Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago’s KINETIC program also debuted a poem, constructing images of their cultural experiences. (더 보기…)
