Fourth annual Asian American action day draws 400 to Springfield

Community members rally in Capitol rotunda against state budget cuts

SPRINGFIELD, IL – Over 400 Asian Americans from across Illinois gathered in Springfield on Thursday to call on Governor Bruce Rauner to restore state funding for essential social service programs, and advocate for the passage of the TRUST Act, which seeks to restore trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve. Imminent budget cuts that threaten the livelihood of immigrant families across the state added urgency to the third annual Asian American Action Day. (more…)

New report details impact of budget cuts on Asian Americans

Community will head to Springfield on Thursday to rally against cuts

CHICAGO – A new report, Cutting Lifelines, released Tuesday by members of the Pan Asian Voter Empowerment (PAVE) Coalition, details the impact that budget cuts proposed by Governor Bruce Rauner would have on Asian Americans in Chicago. Programs that provide resources to limited English proficient residents, citizenship assistance, seek to eliminate the digital divide, and youth after school programs have been cut entirely, while senior care, child care, and hepatitis B treatment and outreach will face significant cuts. LANGUAGE ACCESS ORDINANCE A GOOD FIRST STEP

However, City Council must make emergency services accessible

CHICAGO – A coalition of Chicago-based civic engagement and civil rights groups recognizes the language access ordinance passed by the Chicago City Council as a good first step in improving access to city services for limited-English proficient Chicagoans. However, the groups, including Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago (Advancing Justice | Chicago), Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR), Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), and South Asian American Policy and Research Institute (SAAPRI) urge the Council to soon expand the ordinance to apply to other essential departments, including emergency services and the Chicago Public School system.
