Asian American Groups Welcome Senate Leadership, Call on Congress to Strengthen Family Immigration Overhaul

Senate bill restricts families from reuniting with critical loved ones, addresses the backlog

CHICAGO—Today, a group of senators, dubbed the “Gang of Eight,” released a comprehensive immigration reform bill, Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013. The Asian American Center for Advancing Justice (Advancing Justice)—Asian American Institute (AAI), Asian American Justice Center (AAJC), Asian Law Caucus (ALC) and Asian Pacific American Legal Center (APALC)—welcomes the group’s leadership in bringing immigration reform to the forefront. Unfortunately, the family immigration overhaul proposes changes that will dramatically restrict families from reuniting with certain loved ones and excludes LGBT couples from the family-immigration system. AAI joins Immigration Action Protesting the Separation of Families

On March 22, AAI joined its community partners and the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights to participate in a civil disobedience action and a vigil protesting the breaking up of immigrant families. News outlets reported recently that Senators were considering a major reduction in family visas as part of a compromise on reforming the current system. AAI Executive Director Tuyet Le was on the front lines, and part of the group that included elected officials and community leaders calling on Senator Kirk to stand up for families. Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders (AANHPI) are a community that is nearly two-thirds immigrant and the fastest growing racial group in the United States. In the November 2012 election, the AANHPI community demonstrated that immigration reform is an issue of vital importance to us. Approximately 73% of Asian American voters cast their ballots for President Barack Obama in the November 2012 election. The AANHPI community knows too well the suffering that accompanies restrictive and discriminatory immigration laws – such as the Chinese Exclusion Act and the Asian Exclusion Act – that separate families and result in unequal, second class treatment. The time is now to enact broad, humane immigration reform that advances inclusion, fairness, and equality for immigrants and all communities. Such reform must include the following guiding principles:
