NO DEAL: Senator McConnell and the President Should Reopen the Government Immediately
Asian Americans Advancing Justice rejects President’s proposal
Asian Americans Advancing Justice, an affiliation of five civil rights organizations, issues the following statement:
President Trump in December agreed to “own” the ongoing government shutdown. Today, he proposes to end the crisis of his own making by offering temporary protection from deportation for DACA and TPS recipients, two other crises of his own making, in exchange for $5.7 billion for his Wall and reduced protections for asylum seekers. His proposal today is unacceptable. We call on members of the House and Senate to reject this offer, and for Senator McConnell and the President to reopen the government immediately.
This President has endangered the future of thousands Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who have DACA and TPS. We want a permanent solution for our families and one that does not come at the expense of our brothers and sisters at the border.
Our communities are strong and united, with a majority of Americans in opposition to the construction of a border wall and the expansion of detention camps for mass deportation.
