Dear friends and colleagues,
I’m reaching out to you and your organization to urge you to sign onto a letter opposing New York Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner Ray Kelly’s potential nomination as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). As Police Commissioner of a city with one of the largest immigrant and people-of-color constituencies in the country, Mr. Kelly has overseen “stop and frisk” and surveillance policies and practices that have perpetuated racial and religious profiling, violated civil rights, and eroded police-community relations.
The Secretary of DHS oversees ICE and has the power to impact the lives of millions of immigrants. Mr. Kelly’s track record of “stop and frisk” and surveilling Muslim Americans should preclude him from serving as DHS Secretary, yet he has been suggested as one of the top candidates for DHS Secretary.
You can make your voice heard to oppose the potential nomination of Ray Kelly for DHS Secretary. We are seeking organizational sign-ons. Please sign on using this link: http://tinyurl.com/Ray-Kelly. The deadline to sign on to the letter isCOB on Thursday, September 19.
Stand up against racial and religious profiling and sign on to the letter!http://tinyurl.com/Ray-Kelly.
