Darren Steptoe, born in Oakland, California, and raised in Dallas, Texas, is currently based in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood. He studied theater at Southern Methodist University and earned an A.A. in Acting Performance from KD College: Conservatory for Film and Dramatic Arts in Dallas. 

Darren’s passion for organizing began in 2011 as a Corps Member with AmeriCorps NCCC. He has since led field teams for national, statewide, and municipal campaigns across the U.S. 

He is a recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award and the Congressional Award. 

Darren is dedicated to empowering people through organizing and building up volunteers who can become future community leaders. 

Darren joined Advancing Justice | Chicago because he believes that collective action and community building are key to moving our country forward. He believes that immigration status, race, or nationality should never prevent someone from actively participating in their community.
