Washington, DC – Asian Americans Advancing Justice (Advancing Justice) sends our thoughts and prayers to the families of Alton Sterling in Louisiana and Philando Castile in Minnesota, two African American men who were shot and killed during separate tragic encounters with law enforcement this week and whose deaths have again raised significant questions about police use of force. ASIAN AMERICANS ADVANCING JUSTICE DEEPLY DISAPPOINTED IN SUPREME COURT’S FAILURE TO ALLOW IMPLEMENTATION OF PRESIDENT’S IMMIGRATION RELIEF PROGRAMS

In a 4-4 decision today by the U.S. Supreme Court, the President’s executive actions for immigration relief remain blocked.

“The Supreme Court today failed to act on the opportunity to allow implementation of vital relief programs for nearly 5 million people, including more than 400,000 Asian American immigrants,” said Mee Moua, president and executive director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC. “We are disappointed in their split decision, which further underscores the need to have nine Justices on the Supreme Court.” (और ज्यादा…)

Illinois House Passes Automatic Voter Registration SB250

SPRINGFIELD (May 31, 2016) – Up to 2 million Illinoisans could be added to the voter rolls thanks to an Automatic Voter Registration bill that moved to the threshold of passage Tuesday in the Illinois legislature. The measure passed with bipartisan support, gaining 86 votes.

“With today’s House approval of SB250 and scheduled action today in the Senate, Illinois will move to the forefront of a national effort to make our democracy more accessible and more inclusive,” said Trevor Gervais, lead organizer for Common Cause Illinois. “This bill makes voter registration convenient and simple by adding qualified citizens to the rolls automatically when they do business at Drivers Services and other state agencies.” (और ज्यादा…)
